Recorded in 1982, Pica Pica finds Brötzmann (this time within a trio including Günter Sommer and Albert Mengelsdorff) in a much more restrained environment than usual. The loud outbursts of sounds are rare and far apart, but the strange and obscure ground these musicians explore here more than make up for the lack of constant sensory assaults Brötzmann is usually associated with. The first track (Instant Tears) by itself makes this a wonderful album. At their quietest, the trio can come up with sounds that boggle the imagination; I at times forget I'm listening to trained musicians and not some sort of tribal ceremonial music using exotic, man-made instruments. Wie Due Mir, So Ich Dir Noch Lange Nicht starts of traditionally enough before delving once again into alien territory (some parts even sound like tibetan folk music). The title track, at just four minutes long is a jumpy little number which disappears as quickly as it started. |
