The Surfers continue where they left off with Hairway to Steven on this mid-period album. I love the group when they're at this most deranged, and this one certainly is (in fact, it's a complete mess), but I've always felt as if something was missing. Their sound was certainly slowly getting heavier, something which would culminate on Independent Worm Saloon, but I've always felt as if the music was slightly less varied, not as psychedelic and just plain too silly (the fourteen-year-old-who-enjoys-fart-jokes-at-the-dinner-table kind of silliness). It's just not as subtle as other albums. There are some incredible moments here however, like the completely weird outro to Revolution Part 2 (Gary Schandling certainly must be proud), the deep fried cover version of Donovan's The Hurdy Gurdy Man and the hilariously fucked up No, I'm Iron Man. The album is still worth getting on it's own, but the addition of the wild Widowermaker! EP makes this a no-brainer.
