Composed between 1946-48, Sonatas and Interludes is one of Cage's last works for prepared piano. According to him they "are an attempt to express the 'eternal emotions' of the indian tradition in music". Besides the microtonal aspect of this recording from the combinations of sounds caused by the dampers placed on the pianos strings, my knowledge of indian music is too limited for me to appreciate the imagery which is supposed to be conjured up through these percussive sounds. The music is quite difficult to appreciate at face value, but once one is immersed in Cage's sound world, there is a distinctive beauty which emanates from these twenty pieces. Hinterhäuser does a wonderful job performing these pieces. His playing is very expressive and his deep understanding of Cage's intentions give life to these otherwise difficult sounds.
