Anyone who is only familiar with The Velvet Underground and listens to this CD to hear Cale's work outside of the legendary group is in for a mighty surprise. This is difficult music at it's most extreme, the first track alone is twenty minutes worth of dueling violins played at maximum volume, the oscillations between the two drones being the only active element in the song. Ex-Cathedra is a beautiful (if harsh) pulsing synth drone, the next track is a work for prepared piano not unlike John Cage's work) and Carousel sounds like static noise. On A Midnight Rain Of Green Wrens At The World's Tallest Building, Cale creates a drone similar to friend La Monte Young's own studies in the genre, albeit on a much smaller scale. The last track Hot Scoria is the ne-plus-ultra of guitar noise; completely nuts. Fascinating if you can separate this experimental work from Cale's more "mainstream" outings. |
