Neil Campbell
Neil Campbell is mostly known for his work with England's kings of psychedelic drone musicians The Vibracathedral Orchestra, but he has also worked on a few side projects, namely Astral Social Club and under his own name for different collaborations. However, no matter what name he is working under, there is one certain thing about this man's work, you can bet it will never really stray far away from drone-based music. It might sound quite harsh at times, or more mellow and spaced-out at others, but the presence of drone is never too far away. And of course this sound is also similar to fellow artists Birchville Cat Motel, fellow musician and sometimes collaborator Matthew Bower's many different projects (Sunroof!, Skullflower, The Hototogisu, etc...) and the more experimental releases by Richard Youngs (especially those in collaboration with Simon Whickham-Smith).
I had heard of Vibracathedral Orchestra for quite a while back before I heard M.Campbell's solo work and it was pretty much by chance that I did. After contacting Campbell Kneale (not Neil Campbell, no), head honcho for the Celebrate/Psi/Phenomenon, to order a Kemialliset Ystävät LP he had in stock, I was informed of the total amount I owed in New Zealand dollars (they didn't have Paypal at the time). I needed twenty-five such dollars, but my exchange bureau only had two twenty NZ dollar bills, so I simply wrote and asked if he could send me anything which would cover the difference. So along with the LP (which was since then sold on eBay), came this recent collaboration he had done with Neil campbell. I hadn't been collecting any of the Vibracathedral Orchestra releases back then, this was done much later, but had I not received this surprise CD, I probably wouldn't have come around to getting any of them.
