As soon as the first few notes are played at the start of the album and you hear someone shouting "My smile is dirt, I can not go back to your frown land", you know that you're probably in way over your head with this one; this a few levels under what you might call conventional music. As soon as this first song is over, you get some fake archival folk tune that sounds like something out of a Lomax compilation, but the lyrics are just too odd to sound from that era (check out China Pig). There are a few of these "spoken" bits throughout the album, but the real gems are the out-of-whack rock tunes which made the man famous. Moonlight On Vermont is one of my favorites with it's incredible distorted riffs and skewed lyrics. Other favorites include When Big Joan Sets Up and Pena, this last one is absolutely insane! An absolute must for any fans of strange music.
