Toodoos starts off sounding like an alternative soundtrack to some incredibly obscure Brothers Quay film. Fingers Of The Underworld indeed has a disturbing chamber music vibe gone wrong as a mental inmate psycho-babbles on and on and on until his throat is sore. Or perhaps this is a black metal tune performed by actual forest trolls. Of course nothing else on the album sounds remotely like the first track, yet it is unmistakably Caroliner (and without a suffix this time)! Some other tracks on this album sound like an alternate soundtrack to Eraserhead, others are like an opera for psychopaths and none of it makes any amount of sense. You really have to be mentally stable to be able to get through a whole LP of Caroliner (no, wait - that should read unstable). This is weirdness for weirdness' sake, yet it somehow works. Only Volcano The Bear come as close to Caroliner for recapturing the spirit of early Residents madness.
