Christina Carter
Christina Carter is of course one of the original members of the legendary psych-folk Charalambides. Carter is quite renowned for her haunting vocals and when she goes solo, they take center stage. Although her solo efforts feel much less improvised than her work with Charalambides, the loose structure and minimal nature of her songs and her droning guitar sound don't let her stray too far away from her main project. A great sadness emanates from these solo albums. One gets a bizarre impression of loneliness and a quiet need for introspection soon follows. Her powerful yet lulling vocals and the cascading reverb-laden guitar notes, like rain, is truly something one should experience in solitary or isolated somehow in order to appreciate them to the fullest. The slightest disturbance might ruin the hypnotizing nature of this artist's work.
Although I've listened to Charalambides for quite some time, I never got around to purchasing any of Carter's solo albums. This happened only recently in 2007 during a Charalambides gig here in Montreal (I'm one of those who prefer waiting to buy albums at the "merch" booth instead of in stores or even the internet - better prices, more choice, what can I say?). Now that I've finally heard the subtle differences between the two, I can guarantee you that both have something unique to offer and that more will eventually make it's way onto these pages.
