Tom Carter
Carter was one third, and is now one half of texas psych-folk ensemble Charalambides. After hearing pretty much any of the man's albums, it's quite clear to me where Charalambides' more psychedelic and experimental side comes from. Christina Carter might have her own trippy sound, but I've always seen her as the emotional side of the duo. Put together, the results are often phenomenal, yet to hear their solo efforts sheds much light one where the two come from. A solo Tom Carter album is much like a Derek Bailey album on quaaludes. The music is completely improvised. At times coming off as chaotic, at others, shimmering and beautiful. The artist is a genius at making the guitar sound like anything but the guitar. On many occasions I've wondered how in the hell he manages to pull off a certain sound. It is so peculiar at times that you could probably mistake the music for alien signals recorded at NASA. Fans of drone, psych-folk and the mysterious possibilities of the guitar owe it to themselves to check out Carter's music. Too bad so many albums are difficult to find nowadays.
