It's a thrill to see the Kranky label picking up these obscure little gems by the Charalambides bunch. Like the others, Tom Carter's Monument was first released on the band's own CD-R label: Wholly Other. With only two songs, Carter sets us on a monumental journey of astronomical size (and this using only a guitar and a few effects). It's simply baffling to hear what kind of sounds the man can get out of this good old-fashion instrument. It might a challenging listen, but once you can let go and let yourself be absorbed in these mysterious soundscapes, you completely forget what you are listening to. Of course, actually letting go isn't as simple as it seems considering Carter's incredibly minimalist approach to song progression. These two tracks sound and feel as if we were listening to the slow formation of cosmic clouds or the collision of ions in space. With long passages of complete silence between each bout of noise or drone.
