Similarly to William Basinski, Chalk uses manipulated piano sounds for this particular release. Instead of looping old recordings however, Chalk seems to use an Ebow across piano strings and some reverb to create long drawn out notes that sometimes clash with each other to produce feedback and microtones. As lovely as this might sound at first, the results are far from pretty and soothing; there is a dark, ominous and funereal feel to these tracks. This could very well be the music we hear the very moment we die; sad and scary at first but peaceful and hypnotizing once one gets accustomed to the chaotic nature of these ever-shifting sounds; like clouds cascading over the hilltops. This album was first released on a rare cassette edition and I believe the CD reissue uses the same source material as the recording is saturated with tape hiss. This is music for a sad spring day as the freezing rain dissolves the remaining snow. |
