The very first release on the now legendary BYG/Actuel label and what a doozy it is! "Mu" First Part is a monster of an album yet the personnel is limited to only two: Don Cherry on most instruments and Ed Blackwell on drums. The latter plays like he's got a few extra arms, it's simply incredible to hear him go solo at times. Cherry is of course armed with his faithful pocket trumpet on most of the tracks but makes an exception on Amajelo where he plays a bamboo flute and on Terrestrial Beings where he plays the piano. This last track might be short, but it's also one of the most mesmerizing on the album as Cherry let's every note resonate and sparkle, sometimes getting into a groovy pattern before breaking apart again. There's some powerful chemistry between the two musicians throughout and very often, one can actually hear the sparks fly as these energies meet. How they manage to keep everything under control baffles me. |
