I ran to the store after reading early reviews saying Clouddead had succeeded in mixing the pastoral sounds of Boards Of Canada and mc-ing. I remember sitting on the floor next to my bed, popping the CD into my sister's portable (this was before iPod!) and staying that way for over an hour, absorbing the sounds and trying to figure out what was going on. I can't say I liked it at first. The production was great (the intro to Apt.A (1) is simply beautiful), but I wasn't sure about the vocals. This definitely sounded like a "white boy" album and the flow wasn't always smooth (especially Why? - in fact, I still don't like his vocals) and Dose One sounded like a B-Real wanna-be. It took many listens to get used to it, but I grew to love Dose One's eccentric take on the genre (he has a real talent with words, the Captain Beefheart of hiphop). This album single-handedly changed the face of hiphop forever. A classic! |
