Is there such a thing as a more delightful song than opening Bird On The Wire? Such simplicity, such sadness, such a breath of fresh air! Cohen's second album might not contain as many "hits" as many others, but it remains brimful of poetry and love. This is a remarkable phenomenon with Cohen; the songs might often be dark and grave, yet Cohen's love for his themes and characters always shines forth radiantly. I also love the way, the music, although simple with their minimal chord changes, always includes subtle psychedelic touches like a fuzz guitar solo (!!!?) or the jews harp to liven things up ever so slightly. Once again, there are no weak tracks to be found here, every song is a small masterpiece, yet some do stand out; like the passionate Story Of Isaac or the lovely The Partisan with it's cascading guitar melody. This might be deep and complex, however, it is much more accessible than one might think. Two bonus tracks this time.
