Alice Coltrane
To me, Alice Coltrane is the feminine equivalent of Sun Ra. Her music is spaced-out and free, the esoteric imagery and symbolism behind the music on par with Ra's obsession with space and it's possibilities and above all there is something about her music that is very very appealing to any fans of psychedelic music; namely the fact that it is quite trance inducing. The overload of sounds and sensations that emerge from her music might at times be quite overwhelming, but it is never boring and always engaging.
The first time I heard her music was in my favorite record store in Montreal. One of the clerks had put Universal Consciousness on in the store and I was immediately drawn to it. When I asked what it was, I was a bit surprised, sure this was based in jazz, but I had always associated Alice Coltrane's name with a more standard version of the genre. What I was hearing however was absolutely wild and mesmerizing. I didn't purchase the CD right away; that would have to wait until my move to Sweden. There it was at a very fair price in a local music store. I've been trying to find her other recordings, but they seem quite difficult to find, especially since I want them all in the same mini-LP format that I have for Universal Consciousness.
