What a stunning album. I am no expert on Alice Coltrane, but I like what I hear. Hair-raising string arrangements, frantic organ play and intense, frenetic drums. Add a touch of psychedelia and your on your way for one wild ride. The two first tracks are quite relentless when it comes to sheer energy, barely leaving ay breathing space for it's listeners, but things eventually calm down starting with Oh, Allah! with it's groovy organ work and slow string (but the drums are still as hectic). Hare Krishna is a grandiose work with it's lush strings and gentle karma-filled organ arpeggios. Sita Ram is a raga-based tune with the main drone played on what sounds like a synth. The organ leitmotiv in this song is quite interesting. On the last track, Coltrane pulls out all the guns as strings, organ, drums and harp all make appearances, but it is a relaxed tune, without any of the zealousness of the first two tracks. |
