Comus
Comus doesn't sound like your typical folk group. Instead of being pleasant and soulful, they can be downright scary at times. They sing about the occult, christians being tortured, rape, lust and all things naughty. I hear two sides to them: the nice frosty side complete with lulling female vocals and beautiful guitar phrasings and then you've got the unhealthy, creepy side with it's nasty goblin-esque vocals and aggressive violins. One thing is for sure, they won't leave you indiffernt. You either love or either hate them. I really have to thank Aquarius Records for turning my ears to this group (although I bought my copy through Gemm); their review of First Utterance really sparked my curiosity.
For the longest of time, it has been quite difficult to find their work. The japanese edition CD was already a hassle to find (and the hefty price didn't help to make things easier) so you could forget about the vinyl. However, this situation has changed recently and their complete discography is now available at a decent price in America in one convenient collection. I opted to get the japanese versions simply because I like the seperate mini-LP packaging better. Regardless what you choose however, you can simply be thankful that this legendary obscurity in the annals of folk and prog can finally be enjoyed by all.
