As much as I love Connors' work in general, some albums are more difficult than others. I am personally more used to his later albums which drift from bluesy, ambient solo guitar work to noisy, hissy drone; so when confronted with an early alien blues album like Come Night, I don't know exactly how to react. Like the four CD box set of his early solo works, I find this one much more difficult to digest. Similarly to Derek Bailey's improvisational work, Connor's playing feels like it's all over the place and about to crumble at any given moment. His ghostly vibrato is used profusely throughout and feels quite relaxed alongside the stuttering blasts of notes we are sometimes confronted with. Langille's deep voice and Cartwright's sax does provide some stability, but it feels very bare-boned nonetheless. Beauty does emanate from these songs, but I wouldn't recommend it to newcomers. |
