I'm used to Connors' lo-fi, muffled, hissy sound on most of his album, but it's quite extreme on this one. If you can get past this (it's actually quite overwhelming), then the music found beneath this layer of noise is actually quite beautiful. Dark, but beautiful. Connors uses what sounds like a wah-wah pedal on most of these tracks and there is often this deep bass rumbling away in the back. Everything is literally drowned in reverb, making a lot of the sounds resonate like a drone (similarly to The Bridge, but there are melodies here, no real soundscapes). Parts four and six are particularly nice with the former sounding like he's playing in outer space. The two last tracks were composed after the 9/11 tragedy and are dedicated to New York City. The acoustic guitar on both these tracks is a nice touch and gives the work a rustic, comforting feel. |
