Through seven short solo guitar tracks, Connors successfully manages to depict one of Hans Christian Andersen's saddest short stories through sound. A great choice by Connors as this story is one that fully embodies his often recurring themes of poverty, injustices, hopes and dreams. These are probably Connors' most sorrowful songs to date and listening to these, it almost feels as if it were you, huddled there between two houses, bare feet in the snow trying to keep yourself warm with a few matches. When Dawn finally comes (when the little is found dead, but seemingly at peace), the music is simply devastating. The Little Match Girl suite being too short by itself, the CD comes with a series of Connors' ambient/blues explorations (and they don't sound too far-off in comparison with the previous songs). An absolutely beautiful piece of work once again by this incredible guitarist. |
