Album Cover

Another hiss-heavy exercise in gloomy atmospheres balanced out by cosmic-blues numbers. This time the album's main theme is the miserable conditions to which the NYC paperboys were exposed to at the turn of the 20th century. This album reminds me of Hell! Hell! Hell! Hell! Hell! as it starts off on an aggressive note before settling into a quieter mood. But even the noisier tracks have soul and a story to tell this time (that loud, recurring note on Inside The Cruelty Of Day really drives the song - and is that a guitar solo in there?). When tracks like Onona's Kid with it's chirping birds in the background or Doorsteps come along though, the album takes a sharp turn and becomes as fragile and evocative as the grainy black and white photograph which adorns the cover. And when juxtaposed to Connors noisier efforts, their dramatic effect comes through tenfold.
