As much as I tend to discard Faith because of it's minimal goth sound, as much as I love Pornography for it's excessively gloomy nature. It's so incredibly bleak and pessimistic that it becomes cartoonish and it becomes impossible not to listen to such dark lyrics without getting a smile on my face. I can't take the album seriously, but Smith and co. are so intent on alienating the listener that it does spark a reaction in me. But this is done not only by the cryptic lyrics. Pornography is also a huge step up in regards to musicianship. The band's knack for coming up with catchy riffs explodes in a psychedelic rainbow of colors and musical flourishes. It's no wonder it's still considered to be one of The Cure's strongest efforts to date. Pornography even includes my all-time favorite song by the band: A Strange Day (and considering there are no real duds to be found here, that's saying a lot). This edition contains a bunch of rare extras as usual. |
