Although it's check full of hits, I can't say I've ever been a huge fan of The Cure's first album. I actually prefer the american edition entitled Boys Don't Cry (simply because it includes even more hits). However, it's not the fact that there are more or less hits on one or the other edition that turns me off from this first album. I simply don't think that it sounds like The Cure. Sure it's interesting to hear where they come from and their formative years, but I just can't stand the whole bare bones punk sound of the time. I prefer The Cure when they make the whole world feel creepy and dangerous, not when it's all sunshine, puppy dogs and rainbows. I want some meat on them bones!! And I'm sorry, but a Jimi Hendrix cover on a Cure album?! It doesn't work. At least this deluxe edition includes tons of extra material, but then again, I like these (and the whole album for that matter) simply for it's historical value and not the quality of the music.
