Do you guys remember that obscure Sonic Youth recording that went under the title Sonic Death? Those two long side-long noise jams that sounded like they were recorded using a toaster oven and on tape reels that were found under the sofa? Well, The Dead C.'s DR503 sounds like it's inbred offspring. This is some of the most lo-fi rock I've ever heard. Sonic Youth might have sparked some interest in making rock noisy, but The Dead C. really nailed it here and gave birth to the whole genre. What's most impressive however is that no matter how noisy and difficult the music becomes, there's still a strong sense of atmosphere and mood. They might sound like amateurs, but they obviously knew what they were doing. Speed Kills is an incredibly sad song, I have no idea what they are mumbling on about, but through the noise shines a very emotional song. Only The Dead C. could pull this off. |
