There's nothing more gimmicky than a Christmas album, but when a legend like Fahey decides to give it his personal twist, things become suddenly much more interesting than your dusty .99¢ K-Tel CD found at the bottom of a plastic bin with a cracked case. Fahey's signature sound and technique are immediately recognizable even on such tired old "classics" such as Joy To The World or his Christmas Medley. I personally despise the holiday seasons (which for me represents a hectic work schedule, excessive spending, depression, having to rub elbows with people I don't necessarily want to see) and the usual cannon of songs have come to disgust me and send a deathly chill down my spine. Inexplicably, this album actually puts a smile on my face. This artist has breathed new life into these tunes and his love of playing comes out loud and clear. You can practically hear how much fun the man had while playing around with these old institutions. |
