Fahey's fifth album just might be the perfect album for anyone looking for an introduction to the legendary guitarist's work. The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death has a bit of everything that made Fahey such an original. You've got your "standard" folk tunes (there are always exploratory elements in all his work) like Old Southern Medley or Beautiful Linda Getchell, then you've got his unique reworking of old favorites and hymns (Bicycle Built for Two and Saint Patrick's Hymn) and of course you've got Fahey's inventive originals like Orinda-Moraga and my personal favorite track on the album: I Am The Resurrection. This last track lies somewhere between a bluesy and frantic slide guitar number and a psychedelic indian raga, it's quite a show-stopper. As is the following On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean with it's oriental flourishes and haunting atmosphere. I might have a penchant for other albums, but this is the one I come back to regularly for a Fahey-fix.
