Fennesz

Fennesz' place within modern experimental electronica is undeniable. He is one of the first to use live guitar samples and manipulate them beyond recognition to create whole new soundscapes which range from ambient to glitch, to noise. He has influenced countless other artists from Montreal's Tim Hecker to Kaffe Matthews. His style is immediately recognizable and unique and his sound opened the door to a whole new world of possibilities. There were many imitators, but few managed to equal him in originality. He has collaborated with many artists including Peter "Pita" Rehberg and the ubiquitous Jim O'Rourke.

I remember trying to listen to this for the first time after a friend suggested it to me. He made me listen to a copy of the first "Fenno'berg" collaboration and, to be honest, I didn't know what to make of it. This was really noisy and I had a hard time making any sense out of it all. I was just getting into electronica at the time and was more interested in the ambient possibilities of the genre than listening to free-form and difficult improvisations. I eventually went deeper in my research and Fennesz becomes inevitable in one's exploration of experimental electronic music. I tried listening to Hotel Paral.lel and even though the noisier bits did make the recording difficult, I forced myself to go further and the complexities of his work slowly started revealing themselves to me and I've been hooked ever since.

I've owned quite a few of his albums before I sold my whole collection to move to Sweden back in 2003, although they aren't priorities at the moment, I do intend on getting them back some day.
