Fille Qui Mousse

National Flag

I was unaware of the whole history behind this album, the only one by Fille Qui Mousse, when I started listening to them. After falling in love with the sounds of Lard Free, I wanted to discover other psychedelic groups from France. Mahogany Brain, Anima and Fille Qui Mousse were next on my list. Se Taire Pour Une Femme Trop Belle had recently been released. The cover art with the black cat and beer glass collage didn't exactly help me in wanting to check them out. It was only on a trip to Paris, France that I decided to listen to the album when I saw it in a small music store in Montmartre.

Listening to the first track in the store, it first made me think of Neu! (I don't think so anymore) and that was sufficient to make me buy the album right then and there. Not having a CD player on my trip, I had to wait until I was back in Montreal to hear the rest. Boy was I ever surprised. This album is probably the most absolutely strange album I have yet to hear in my life. It is beyond any description. To think that this album was never officially released before this CD edition, to know that there were only ten test pressings back in 1971 before the album was shelved, to know that it took thirty years for it to see the light of day and be available to a wider audience is a travesty. Of course, after years of being an obscure curio in the annals of psychedelic music, the group and the album have become the stuff of legends. A copy of the test pressing is rumored to have sold for 3000$. Sick!

Question is: does the music on the album live up to the expectations? I am not very well-placed to answer this, having only discovered the group after it's official CD release. It remains, however, one of the most unique and bizarre musical experiences I have ever had, which is saying quite a lot. I'm definitely glad I have the album in my collection and even though it is incredibly strange, it still regularly pop into my CD-player and it is always in my iPod.
