Flower Travellin' Band
The ultimate japanese heavy psych band if there ever was one. These guys managed to blend all of their influences and create something completely unique out of it. Listening to the Flower Travellin' Band is like tasting a good wine, you look for hints and flavors. I sometimes hear the stoner, incredibly slow and heavy guitar riffs of Black Sabbath, or maybe the psychedelic touches and unintelligible psychobabble of Amon Düül II at their weirdest or maybe even the rigid and complex progrock structure of early King Crimson. It's prog, it's psych, it's metal, it's all of the above. Joe, the group's singer was wailing away like a heavily-accented banshee years before Rob Halford squeezed his balls in tight leather pants. Way ahead of their time, yet these guys remain some sort of a cult rock group and never received the same praise other like-minded groups did at the time. Hopefully the recent re-issues of their albums will succeed in making these guys a household name among other pioneers in the business.
I actually found out about the Flower Travellin' Band at pretty much the same time I discovered Speed, Glue & Shinki, a similar japanese-filipino psych rock outfit. I started collecting a few of these two's recordings, but when Warner Japan released deluxe edition mini-LP versions of their records, I sold my copy and purchased these expensive releases and they are absolute beauties.
