Michael Morley's solo project was my gateway (no pun intended) into the whole New Zealand noise-rock scene. I fell in love with his depressing lo-fi and noisy loops when it was playing in my favorite record store in Montreal. I had to ask what it was and was told I was listening to a track entitled Spirits off of The Wisher Table and that the guy behind the sound was also a member of The Dead C (a group I had never heard of at the time). And thus began my exploration of all things kiwi, soon after came Birchville Cat Motel and Roy Montgomery (whom I actually knew before from a collaboration with Flying Saucer Attack)

When I began looking for other albums by Gate, I was surprised to actually recognize some of the album covers from my years working in a mainstream music store; especially the dark and mysterious tinted photographs of The Dew Line and Monolake. I eventually purchased everything I could get my hands on but sold many of these before my move to Sweden (an error I regret to this day).
