German Oak
Probably one of the most underground bands from the krautrock era (I mean they flew ten feet above my head - or maybe that's under my feet - when I was exploring the whole scene a few years back) most famous for having recorded their first eponymous album in a WWII bunker to channel the spirits of the dead and tortured into their sound. Well I don't if they managed to channel anything else then the funky smell because with these insane results, it's no wonder the No Neck Blues Band have namedropped them as influences. There's a lot of history in those bunkers, but not so much about this band except that they went on to become somewhat of a curio in the psychedelic rock scene of the days. Their music is very primitive and heavy, sometimes off-beat, as if the spirits of the dead might have taken over their playing and caused to sound like a bunch of grumbling zombies. Zombie-rock would actually be a pretty good description.
I first heard about this band when Aquarius Records had the group's first album as album of the week. Krautrock + NNCK influence = Must have in my book. Unfortunately, the reissue did not include the extra tracks which I had been able to hear through mp3, so it actually took over a year for me to find a decent-priced copy of the Witch & Warlock release. But I now own it and my soul may now rest in peace.
