GHQ

GHQ (General Head Quarter) are Marcia Basset (of Double Leopards, UN fame), Pete Nolan (Magik Markers) and Steve Gunn. Although this particular project is also based in drone, it sounds nothing like these artists' main projects. This feels more like the long lost spirit of the sixties New York loft scene (think Theatre Of Eternal Music with Angus MacLise and John Cale) as interpreted by pagan worshippers during some drunken, bloody ritual. This music alternates between soothing and completely overwhelming, yet it's constantly creepy as fuck, primitive and lobotomizing! Fans of Basset's other projects will most certainly love this even though we are quite far from the barrages of noise she is renowned for with Double Leopards and Hototogisu. The acoustic instruments and folk roots are a nice addition to the pulsating and droning music she is associated with.

As is often the case, I hesitated before buying GHQ records because, considering the collective's release schedule, getting everything they released certainly would have ruined me. I went ahead and bought a few during their gig opening for Charalambides during the summer of 2007.
