Tim Hecker
I first heard Tim Hecker's work when he went under the name Jetone. He had released an album on the then popular Force Inc. who had offices in Montreal (this was a big thing at the time and I wanted to hear what Montreal artists had to offer at the time). Although Jetone was more beat oriented and was clearly based in the IDM scene, there were signs of what was to come in some of the shorter, more ambient tracks. When Hecker finally went under his own name, I completely fell in love with his work and to this day, I consider him the best electronic artist Montreal has offered to date. There are some clear signs of Fennesz influences in his work, but where as the austrian's work could get quite noisy at times, Hecker's work was constantly beautiful and haunting.
I'll always remember listening to his debut on headphones at the time. This was a pretty shitty period in my life: recently separated, no money, no job and yet I couldn't stop buying music. I'm one of those who believes music can be as important as food and Hecker's album was like expensive anti-depressant medicine in aural form. For fifteen bucks, nothing could make me feel better. The nostalgic, dreamy vibe of the music was just what I needed at the time and is the perfect soundtrack for daydreaming. More records followed and I've followed his career ever since. I did sell my copies of his albums when came time to move to Sweden back in 2003 (including the rare Mille Plateaux version of Radio Amor), but I have since slowly been getting them back.
Of all my personal influences for my own musical work, Hecker is the artist I am most jealous of. Yes jealous! Not only is he from the same hometown, but he has also successfully managed to create music which I myself have always wanted to create but have yet been unable to.
