Daniel A.I.U. Higgs
Attention fans of Ben Chasny's Six Organs Of Admittance and MV+EE, there's a new player on the scene and his name is Daniel (A.I.U. - Arcus Incus Ululat, or sometimes "belte Shazzar") Higgs. Well, this self-proclaimed "interdimensional song-seamstress" isn't actually new on the scene, he used to be the lead singer for Lungfish (who have been on hiatus for years) twenty years ago. But Higgs' background isn't limited to music only, he is also renowned as a former tattoo artist and a lot of his artwork winds up on his records. Higgs is also considered to be some sort of modern shaman, his writings and visions are quite esoteric with a strong emphasis on mythology, the body, the mind and the soul.
These ideas are well packaged within his music, but how to describe it? Everything seems to be recorded using second rate tape recorders with tons of hiss and bizarre distortion through certain effects. He is a master jews harp player and a fascinating banjoist who plays the instrument like it was meant for an indian raga (he sometimes accompanies himself with an electric tambura) and his finger-picking can be lightning fast during certain songs. The resulting songs have this odd feel to them, as if we are listening to century old recordings but with a cryptic twist. It can become quite noisy at times, but the overall effects remain the same and the aggressive nature of these tracks soon give way to a more meditative feel. This is mind-expanding music like you've never heard it before. Absolutely unique and wonderful.
