The Incredible String Band
Ok, this might be folk music, or at least it's roots are in folk music, but this is just way too warped to be your standard fare. The dynamics change on a dime, the lyrics are absolutely out-of-this-world (sometimes nonsensical, sometimes surreal, they have to be heard to be believed, completely cryptic!). The duo of Robin Williamson and Mike Heron use unorthodox musical instruments and do not fear to bring in atonal or arrhythmic elements to their songs, making them ultimately disorienting to the newbie listener. With all this put into consideration, it is hard to believe how charming the delivery of their work comes across; that's right "charming"! Every time I listen to them, a smile is bound to appear on my face. Besides Comus (who are far from being charming), I don't believe there has ever been a folk outfit that has impressed me as much for their eccentric songs. There is also a very psychedelic touch to The Incredible String Bands music which only pushes their already far-out music into new dimensions. Simply marvelous!
