Justice

National Flag

I finally caved in! After weeks and weeks of friends and family asking me what I thought of them, if I was going to see them play live and pretty much forcing them upon me, I had to give it a spin. It was only when a close friend of mine whom I hadn't seen in a long time actually let me copy the CD onto my computer that I finally got my first glimpse of what I was supposedly "missing". I gave it a quick listen and found it quite amusing, but I wasn't yet sure it was for me. When I eventually found out these frenchmen were on the incredible Ed Banger Records label (also home to the mind-blowing"electrobatics" of Sebastian), I knew for sure their work would wind up in my collection somehow and it was on a gray winter's shopping day that I did, finding it for a reasonable price in a megamall.

What is there to say about Justice!? Well, the first thing that came to mind when I first heard their freshman effort Cross is exactly just how much of an influence fellow countrymen Daft Punk have had on them and the whole french techno scene. It's actually quite surprising how many people and artists they've reached with their rough and dirty sound. Not only are they basically responsible for spawning the whole dirty electronica scene (and perhaps part of the electro clash scene) of the new millennium, but their infectious rhythms have even reached across the seas (just check out their canadian equivalent: MSTRKRFT) to become an international thing! Justice are one of the many artists to have followed in their footsteps, but I would specify that they are one of the few who took the Daft Punk sound and boosted it with a dose of garage punk attitude. The results sound like party music for the disaffected, the frustrated, the underground. Raise the volume a bit and you might have a riot on your hands! Although I find them inconsistent in parts, there's no denying how fun this music is; like an angry DJ Shadow with vengeance on his mind, don't fuck with Justice cuz there's no telling just how hard they'll hit back.
