Karuna Khyal
Are the musicians of Karuna Khyal the same as the one's from Brast Burn? They both sound quite similar, they both released only one album on Voice Records back in 1975, both of the albums contain side-long tracks and are practically the same length! The only real difference I hear between the two is that Karuna Khyal's music is slightly darker than Brast Burn's, especially when it comes to the vocals. The melodies are slightly less catchy, there's a lot of loud droning and they sound more like early Residents than their supposed colleagues did. This doesn't make them less trippy however, it's still really fucked up and will probably cause your brain to retract in fear and confusion.
I wouldn't have discovered this or the slightly better Brast Burn if it wasn't for Karuna Khyal. While flipping through the racks of my favorite music store in Montreal, I would always stop at that one to check out the strange cover art... it's just totally perplexing! What was it supposed to be? Damned if I knew! It looks like a giant 50's housewife caught in a plastic bubble watching over a city. Or is that even a woman in there? Was there supposed to be some sort of hidden meaning behind this imagery? After noticing it every time I was looking through the racks, I finally decided to listen to it and the Brast Burn CD. I bought the Debon CD first, but quickly went back to get this one the next day.
