Makoto Kawabata
Makoto Kawabata is the frizzy-haired psychedelic guru behind heavy acid rock mongers Acid Mother Temple. Not only is this group extremely prolific (often releasing albums once every fortnight), but the man behind the group and his side-projects are as prolific, if not more then this main project (and I'm not even counting his numerous collaborations and split albums!!!). Phew! Makoto solo is often not very different from the Acid Mother Temple sound; deeply-reverberating heavy psych tunes with ear-piercing guitar solos and distorted beats, but quite often, the man will put out a practically ambient release. These are usually with him playing alone on guitar or some exotic instrument with plenty of reverb or delay to make the sounds take on new shapes. It's very spaced-out and sometimes quite soothing in an almost new-age kind of way.
An obvious influence would be the music of Manuel Göttsching (who is also the man behind Ash Ra Tempel *wink wink*). As did his german soul brother twenty odd years ago, Makoto released a long series of "private tapes", music played at home or his studio, out-takes if you will. These were extremely limited in numbers (from fifty to two hundred copies only) and practically all featured vintage nude female models on the cover.
Being an Acid Mother Temple fan, it was only a matter of time before my curiosity pushed me to explore the music of Kawabata Makoto. During an AMT show, I bought the complete set of Private Tapes (seven at the time) which included an bonus CD-R of really blissful and rare tracks. There were only thirty of these made. In a desperate moment of financial need a few years ago, I sold it to my favorite record store in Montreal at half the price I bought it for. I don't think I've ever regretted selling an item as much as that one (especially for the bonus CD-R which was really good!) and I've promised myself to get them all back! This was recently done not too long ago. But I'm still on the lookout for that extra CD-R! It will be mine, ah yes! It will be mine!
