Kraftwerk
Kraftwerk's influence can be heard even today and is most likely to persist for ages to come. Starting off, like many other german rock groups of the era, in the krautrock movement, experimental rock deviations which were themselves influenced by the psychedelic british groups of the late sixties. Kraftwerk however, quickly disassociated themselves from their peers and completely abandoned themselves into their own brand of "robot pop". Their music was extremely minimal and cold, trying to get rid of any forms of funk. Automatic music, but with simple melodies and lyrics which would keep you hooked nonetheless.
Many Kraftwerk fans swear only by their later albums, starting off with Autobahn and even the group seem to wish to ignore their first three experimental albums. It is these however that got me most interested in Kraftwerk in the first place. I knew who they were, I had heard the songs, but I was not interested in the hype that surrounded them, pioneers of electronic music or not. I was so surprised to find out about their earlier roots that I just had to check them out and the fact they were difficult to find on CD at first sparked my curiosity even more. I loved the harshness of these earlier efforts and this got me interested in hearing the evolution in their sound (that and the fact Fassbinder was a huge fan and would use his music in some of his films), so I eventually went ahead and bought some of their classic electronic albums. I am not very interested in anything released after Electric Cafe so my collection will limit itself to the albums up until that point.
