Kuupuu

Kuupuu is the solo project of finnish psych-sensation Jonna Karanka, who is also a member of Kukkiva Poliisi and Hertta Lussu Ässä - a super trio which also includes Merja Kokkonen of Islaja and Lau Nau. The brand of psych-folk she creates the most erratic music of all her female counterparts, she has often been compared to Fursaxa, but as weird as the Philadelphia native is, Kuupuu cranks up the weird factor a few notches. She seems to use any instrument she can find and play it without regards to it's basic function. String instruments are often detuned beyond belief while unidentified sounds interrupt your train of thought (you were probably just trying to figure out what was going on anyway). On earlier albums, Jonna's voice sounds like that of a seven year old fairy. It doesn't sound like an adult voice and it certainly doesn't sound like it's even from this world! Like a gathering of trolls and ghouls playing local folk tunes. It's lovely, but traumatizing at the same time (does that make any sense to you at all? It probably will once you hear this for the first time!).

Kuupuu was another happy when I decided to get my hands on anything that came out of Finland a few years back. I'm lucky to have found these albums on time as most of them are long gone today and Jonna's release schedule is somewhat slow (compared to other artists from her homeland anyway!).
