Angus MacLise
This is the man who quit on Velvet Underground (he was their original drummer) because he thought they had sold out and were becoming too commercial! Well, when you consider where this artist comes from, it's not such a big surprise. Along with fellow VU John Cale, composer and filmmaker Tony Conrad and other assorted musicians and misfits (Terry Riley, Jon Hassell), MacLise was a part of La Monte Young's legendary Theater Of Eternal Music. This ensemble was renowned for it's all-night drone jams and weird artsy installations. When you listen to this man's recordings, you can hear precisely where his roots lie (there are not too many either) and who he has influenced (may viking Gods strike me with great anger if the NNCK don't know about him). There's a strong interest in middle-eastern and oriental music styling, tape loops and beat poetry.
I personally started listening to his records after seeing some of his albums in a psychedelic music section in a small Montreal store. I didn't make the VU connection back then, but when I found out, a whole new world opened itself to me, I started listening to all the aforementioned artists at approximately the same time and it was MacLise's weird noises and drones that first sparked my curiosity (although other artists like Young or VU would become more of a focus). There are a few collections of MacLise's work out there and I plan on getting them all eventually.
