Magical Power Mako
Even though he has been composing music for over thirty years now, Magical Power Mako remains a very obscure figure in the whole japanese psych scene. I don't believe there are two albums that sound remotely alike. One might be experimentaltape loops and weird field recordings paired with bizarre traditional music setting, moody and psychedelic Ash Ra Tempel-like guitar/drum jams or even bizarre electronic tidbits. Difficult to pinpoint and describe his sound, but one thing is for sure, this music is weird! Harmony Korine of Gummo fame is supposedly a big fan of his if that is any hint for you.
Emusic.com has to be thanked once again for letting me hear this for the first time. Magical Power Mako was my first glimpse into the japanese psych scene. I heard Blue Dot and fell in love with it, but it took a while for me to actually purchase something. I got his first three albums when they were released in a really nice mini-LP edition and have been collecting his work slowly ever since.
