J.O. Mallander
Jan-Olof Mallander, a swedish-finnish artist (a minority in Finland), is another artist who worked within the infamous Sperm collective in the late sixties. One could describe Mallander's role as being the conceptual force behind the group (along with Matti-Juhani Koponen - although both came from different artistic backgrounds). He is reported to be the one who brought back the infamous Velvet Underground flexidisc from Aspen magazine (in NYC) which was a huge influence on Pekka Airaksinen, the musical force of Sperm. It was these frequent boat trips (he would work there) that gave him the opportunity to experience the massive artistic revolution of the time. He met and became friends with Nam June Paik (with whom he considers have had very fruitful and important conversations), followed the Fluxus movement, frequented happenings; a time he claims has formed his artistic character and spirit.
Of his few available works, many have similarities with the Fluxus movement's ideas, other's are closer to european sound-poetry (Åke Hodell for example). Mallander is still active today, participating in various poetry readings. He has also worked as a critique for the important swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter during the seventies and is a devout buddhist.
