Marumari
For those of you who overdosed on the whole minimal glitch-house scene which spawned countless zealous bedroom producers who thought they could stand out in a sea of sameness, Marumari will sound incredibly refreshing. Imagine Boards Of Canada had they only concentrated on the playful side of their music. Rarely will a dark and gloomy track infiltrate Marumari's albums, leaving space for more uplifting beats, pleasant melodies and dreamy (almost psychedelic) atmospheres. Fans of label mate Casino Vs. Japan will most probably enjoy this quite a bit as well. Some songs actually feel like flashbacks to one's childhood: kicking a ball in the park, digging for treasures in your backyard, saturday morning cartoons and the ubiquitous peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Always gentle, totally trippy, this is one of those rare artists whose music is both enjoyable on those dark and cloudy days or when the skies have cleared up in the morning, leaving a cold and shimmering dew reflecting in the sun. Although the music is very child-like, the compositions are quite mature, rich and complex... just like the flavors in a warm cup of cocoa with an oversized purple marshmallow floating on top.
It's pure chance that I got to hear Marumari's albums in the first place. I had noticed the name in my favorite music store in Montreal (which is sadly now closed since 2005), but didn't pay much attention. When I found The Wolves Hollow for a mere three bucks in a used record store, I thought I'd give it a chance. I didn't know what to think about it at first, this was totally obscure, I had never heard anything about the artist before, yet there was something hypnotizing about his sound and the cheesy choice of artwork. Was I supposed to take this seriously? Is this just some pimply-faced teenager playing around with his parent's computer? After spending the next few minutes listening to every little detail on every song, and once the album was over, all questions had faded away and I knew I had struck gold.
