This was another early purchase in my discovery of The Melvins. I really picked all the wrong albums Prick, Stag then this. Not that these albums are bad, quite the contrary, it's just that at this point in their career, The Melvins were experimenting a lot more with their sound and violently trying to disassociate themselves with the grunge scene they got sucked in. The Melvins weren't a one-trick pony and they wanted to make sure everyone would understand this and hopefully they could filter out the trendy fans from the true fans in the process. The creepy, almost dark ambient They All Must Be Slaughtered (featuring vocals by main Babes In Toyland singer Kat Bjelland) is the album's most fascinating track. Only Mombius Hibachi will satisfy those who like their Melvins on the heavier side. The rest of the album sounds like it could be some obscure Butthole Surfers album. Oh and please make sure you stick around for the "hidden track" at the end. |
