The Melvins' follow-up to their classic Houdini is just a decibel short of being as good. I prefer to see them as only one album as both are quite similar. Just like it's predecessor, there are many classic Melvins rock anthems to be found here, mostly on the first half as the record slowly drifts towards more experimental territory. After the pounding intro that is Skweetis, we are treated to the record's hat trick: Queen, Sweet Willy Rollbar and Revolve are three intense numbers that will have all fans of the group drool as they raise the volume to dangerous levels. There are more songs in the same mold throughout the records, but they are interspersed by mellower and/or curious tunes. With Roadbull, one of my favorites, you get both in one! And what would a Melvins album be without that one head-scratching number? Here it comes it the shape of Lividity, a stoner organ drone fest if there ever was one. |
