Listening to The Best It Ever Was is like hearing the theme song to some seventies country-themed, family-oriented show... while on acid. The slow yet playful melody, the ubiquitous harmonica, it's all there, being eaten up by strange explosions of reverb and distortion. Too bad it's such a short instrumental track. The Midden Of The Guilford Mound, although quite different with it's use of vocals, could also be used in the same way. The tone is yet again very cheerful, pastoral and occasionally tripped out. Looking at the beautiful cover, I was expecting this 7" to be in the same vein as the duo's Ragas Of The Culvert which is easily their most psychedelic effort to date. Anyone who enjoys MV+EE when they sound fresh off the front porch should definitely hunt this little gem down. |
