First released through Polyamory on cassette under the name Matthew Dell back in 1997 (a release I am still out after), Glorious Group Therapy is an early example of MV's patented psych-folk at it's most out there. Just the opening Feel... The Music is somewhere between a traditional appalachian front porch standard folk tune and a ceremonial incantation to some pagan god. If any of you miss Valentine's most out-there moments, please do yourselves a favor and hunt this album down. It's easily one of the seven primitive psych-folk wonders of the world. The artist's folk roots are everywhere to be heard, but the delivery is so incredibly dizzying that it knocked me down on my ass when I first heard it and made me wonder why Valentine, whether in solo, duo or group environment, doesn't explore these far away sound worlds anymore. Moonshine Raga, I'm Going Down The River and Ceremony Without are all classics in my book. Essential!
