My Cat Is An Alien
No, these guys are not cousins of the horrible Crazy Frog, they're not the aftermath of a horrible cell phone ring tone, neither do they make cheesy Eurodance as their name would tend to imply. This outfit is in fact the result of two cosmos-obsessed brothers from Italy, the super Opalio brothers (no, their first names are not Mario and Luigi either!) and they're the latest psych-noise mongers helming from the Big Boot.
The story goes that the brothers, who compose most of their improvisational noise jams in their own studio (which they charmingly refer to as the "Space Room"), sent in one of their early compositions to Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Moore became so enthralled by the sounds contained within the wire mesh covered record that he contacted the brothers and helped them launch their career, even letting them open for his band during a european tour, and they've been pretty much non-stop ever since. They've rapidly gained the same notoriety for releasing album after album on their own Opax Records imprint or even on other labels as do Japan's Acid Mothers Temple! The week is just not the same without the release of a new My Cat Is An Alien record!
How do they sound? Well, imagine yourselves thousands of toys in a store coming to life at the exact same time during closing hours, some of these toys are malfunctioning due to manufacture defaults, the toys who have the ability to play other toys do so. Things get kind of rowdy as the night progresses, the droning noises getting louder and louder until the whole thing culminates in a cacophonous orgy with the toys sacrificing one of their own to their space gods. All of this in the settings of René Laloux's animated classic La Planète Sauvage, then add some reverb and unidentified noises and I believe that's a good interpretation of what these two can create. Not all of it is toy noises of course, the guitar is also an instrument of choice, but it isn't always recognizable at first. The level of noise often varies from album to album, but the brothers remain very true to their sound and a My Cat Is An Alien record couldn't possibly be mistaken for anything else. Quite unique.
I was quite reluctant at first to start purchasing the brothers' records, that name is just horrible! But never judge a book by it's cover. The descriptions I had read throughout the net of their sound really sparked my curiosity, the references to space, the psychedelic touches; everything about them fit with my musical and thematic tastes and I went ahead and got their rarer releases. I've been hooked ever since and I rarely miss out on anything they put out (although I still have some holes to fill). NO OVERDUBS/NO OUTTAKES!
