PHEW! For a second there I thought Windy & Carl had somehow snuck their music onto this album. Indeed, the first few minutes of Song For Laurie Bird has that distinctive ambient guitar vibe the Michigan-based duo is renowned for (this made me realize it's only a matter of time before NSB sign with Kranky Records - mark my words!) As beautiful as it might be, I was still quite relieved to hear the song slowly blooming into it's own. Things do get a bit nastier towards the end, but that is the NSB way and no matter how haphazard the duo might sound at times, it will always feel fresh. No matter how great this track is, it's the two following tracks which really reach to me. Cockmotherfighting is a folk-drone-raga which makes even the mighty Vibracathedral Orchestra pale in comparison while Orisha's Lament might have you believe these two are pagan devil worshippers awaiting the second coming of Satan. Only 100 copies out there. |
